The 2012 Question – millenarian fantasy or future teleology?

I cannot really blog on these esoteric subjects and ignore 2012. For the uninitiated, 2012, or December 21, 2012 more specifically, has been a date with much weight attached to it in the occult and new age circles. To give a brief summary, the Mayan calendar, one of the most advanced calendars ever created (and more accurate than our modern Gregorian calendar) has an end date of December 21, 2012. Their ancient texts elaborate on this end date, albeit cryptically:

Tortuguero Monument 6, recording the 2012 Bak’tun ending:
Bolon Yookte [This creator God is referenced on the glyph]
“The Thirteenth ‘Bak’tun” will be finished
(on) Four Ajaw, the Third of Uniiw (K’ank’in).
? will occur.
(It will be) the descent(??) of the Nine Support? God(s) to the ?.”

- UT Mesoamerica Center Discussion Board (Google Groups)

Another text also elaborates on this point – however this prophecy and interpretation has been noted to be colored by the influence and interpretation of Spanish Christian Missionaries. The astute reader will notice the parallels between the Christian “second coming of Christ” and the Maya prophecy in the following text:

Book of Chilam Balam of Chumayel, XXII:
Katun 4 Ahau . . . . The katun is established at Chichen Itzá. The settlement of the Itzá shall take place [there]. The quetzal shall come, the green bird shall come. Ah Kantenal shall come. Blood-vomit shall come. Kukulcan shall come with them for the second time. [It is] the word of God.
- Michael Finley’s Maya Website

Bruce Fenton, a very knowledgable 2012 researcher and writer, pointed me towards these two Maya texts. He rightly points out that while there is nothing definitive here, there are some clues that can guide our speculation:

The only thing to bear in mind perhaps is that much was lost when the Spanish invaded, and that the Maya used prophecies from other eras over again by reinterpreting them whilst in trance. So we can posit they would have likely had more than this to tell us. What we can’t say is that anything like a 2012 Doomsday exists in the texts we have available today.

What the astute reader will notice about the end of the cycle writings is an emphasis in importance on returning Gods. Notably a creator God is included indicative of some rebirth before the new Long Count. The significance of the nine God’s should also be noted, as this is cross-cultural mythology. Pantheons of nine Gods are found in ancient Egypt and Norse scripts as well as elsewhere in history. They can often be seen as archetypal energies, which govern both our reality and our own inner nature.
2012 Rising (Bruce’s Website)

Despite the lack of definitive prophecy, many been quick to develop their own. It must be said that what the end date really meant to the Maya is still unknown, and therefore all prophecies are purely speculation. CalendarMany believe this to be the day of apocalypse, when climate changes will hit earth and we are killed and/or born again. Some on the other hand posit that this day will usher in a new level of consciousness – a mass Kundalini awakening of sorts. John Major Jenkins elaborates on 2012 in his two works, Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 and its follow up, Galactic Alignment. In Galactic Alignment, Jenkins builds on his work in Maya Cosmogenesis and finds the end date of 2012 is encoded not only in Mayan astronomy and astrology, but also in the works and monuments of the ancient Vedic, Egyptian, and Persian civilizations, among many others.
This analysis is strong and does seem to carry some research backed authority. However, Jenkins offers more than simply facts to his readers as he takes his research further and speculates as to the meaning of the date. His interpretation has to do with a galactic alignment that occurs every 26,000 years – what he describes as a metaphorical alignment of chakras on a galactic scale with tangible impacts for humanity.Labna Mayan Arch
One can either immediately buy into this belief or immediately dismiss it as a purely millenarian fantasy – either route would be foolhardy. Jenkins work, extremely well researched and thorough as it is, will only convince those who have already been convinced.
The 2012 enigma gets even more interesting than simply speculation on ancient astrology and monuments. Terrence McKenna also independently posited a December 2012 end date at a point in time when he had no knowledge of the ancient prophecies – and nor did most of the existing counterculture. While under the influence of hallucinogenic compounds, the spirit of the mushroom told McKenna to research a Chinese oracle called The I-Ching, or the book of changes. The I ching is an ancient Chinese divination tool that has a long history and was believed by Carl Jung to work through synchronicity. After doing some complex mathematical transforms to convert the I ching into a graph, McKenna matched the valleys and peaks to major known events in time to create what he called a graph of novelty. Basically, he mapped the I-ching against what we know of universal and human history to create a measure of novelty over time. The graph had an endpoint – The zero point, or point of infinite novelty. According to McKenna’s mapping, falls in December 2012.TAIPEI1?1 Mandala (Kaleidoscope) <???: ??101> (by Nokia 6230i)
What can we make of all this? Did the ancients know something we have since forgotten? Was Mckenna given a clue to our future by communication with the collective unconscious? Or is 2012 simply a crackpot millenarian fantasy born of new age occult revivalism and active imaginations? We can be certain about some things: McKenna’s idea of infinite novelty does match up with what we know the future holds for us, technological Singularity. Now, what Singularity means for human civilization is another question entirely – it is entirely plausible that time (as we know it) will end. It is also possible, though very unlikely, that technology gone wild usher in an apocalypse. But then there still remains the question of a consciousness raising event from the stars?
I can have only one conclusion – ultimately, December 21st, 2012 does not matter. I certainly hope singularity will happen soon and 2012 is quite close. In that case, visions of apocalypse may simply be a noospheric or subconscious metaphor for a time of chaos as humanity adjusts to singularity.
The question of consciousness still stays with me though. Daniel Pinchbeck, who has tried to be the 2012 Slave Leias with Jabba the Huttmodern day McKenna, has promoted his own theory – one in which 2012 signals a grand awakening of consciousness and Pinchbeck is the channel for the ancient mayan god Quetzlcoatl. Its a hard pill to swallow – at least a lot harder than the ones that Pinchbeck did to get those visions. However, I will not write off Pinchbeck either. I think he has the message right in some sense, because I pray, for the sake of the masses of humanity, that the stars will hold the solution to a problem that has plagued humanity since the first man asked “Why?”. 2012, real or not, is still a metaphor for a time we hope to reach, when our wrongs will be washed away, our consciousness will be raised to the necessary level to handle singular novelty, and our every fantasy of the future will come to fruition.

Entity Contact

MothershipIt’s hard to write about these esoteric topics avoid discussing the topic of Alien abduction /entity contact. The fundamental point that needs to be made is that entity contact is not a singularly western phenomenon, and it is not a post-1950’s “classic ufo culture” phenomenon. There is something much deeper at work here – far deeper than merely culturally colored hallucinations.

Dark ShinesMany texts from the middle ages discuss succubi or incubi: demons that prey on the sleeping, seducing them and feeding on their sexual energy. This idea sheds a lot of light on the modern alien abduction phenomenon as most of these experiences take place in a sleep state and often these contact experiences are sexual in nature. For the Europeans of the middle ages it was demons from hell and for our contemporaries the entities are aliens from space, but the phenomenon operates in essentially the same way. I believe these two phenomenon are one and the same, colored by the subconscious influence of our culture.  In my research on this topic I encountered the work of Jacque Vallee, who developed a similar theory called the interdimensional hypothesis.

I was listening to an interview Susan Clancy, the Harvard psychologist that “debunked” the UFO phenomenon. She says the contact experience is merely a hypnogogic hallucination (in a strange lucid sleep based altered state, which I have personally experienced). And this is in accord with what I have come to believe about the induction of the phenomenon. McKenna offers some hypotheses on the topic as he believes that the alien contact phenomenon is similar to the smoked DMT experience. However, it should come as no surprise that many scientists believe endogenously produced DMT plays a role in the sleep state. Of course we can explain anything superficially, or explain it away using reductionist models – in this case explaining how these contact experience occur. But the real question is why does it happen and could there be a deeper meaning to this? McKenna also offers some thoughts on this point, believing the entities to be intelligences from hyperspace, essentially a transdimensional communication. This brings us back to the idea of spirits and demons.  Of course Shamans have been using a variety of techniques to induce altered states to communicate with these “beings” for thousands of years, but the links between shamanistic journeying and modern alien abduction go even deeper.

Many alien abductees report energy phenomenon, as if the “aliens” are making adjustments and tuning receptors – located in the very same chakras/nadis of hindu and buddhist spiritual traditions. And it should once more come as no surprise that many of these same experiences are reported by users of smoked DMT. Dr. Rick Straussman has an entire book devoted to the DMT experience and the role it could play in our spirituality, as it is an endogenously produced chemical.  Now the pieces of the puzzle begin to fit together.

12:54pm/08-02-08I believe that what is happening is some type of kundalini related energy phenomenon, initiated, at least superficially, by the DMT (regardless of whether it is endogenous substance naturally released or synthetic and artificially released into the bloodstream). What is interesting is that the avid occult seeker of the Out of body experience trains him or herself to induce these altered states of consciousness using energy exercises to access other realms. If you have ever experienced the OBE, you will notice the characteristic activation of certain energy centers. With that in mind it becomes clear that the kundalini energy plays a huge role in producing altered states of consciousness, through the release of DMT and perhaps other substances, to allow us to access other realms.

Now we have a clear picture on the interelatedness of these phenomenon.  Kundalini energy and DMT play a role in inducing a range of altered states of consciousness and in these altered states we can explore other worlds. The central question still remains: Are these realms purely hallucination, or are they reality?  Or does such a division have any meaning? It certainly does not in the tradition of shamanism.

To err on the side of the (admittedly) crackpot for a moment, let us make the assumption that these realms are real. What can we draw from this? If these entities are real and perhaps are communicating data to us, then there is no doubt that they have been communicating data to us for a long time. Perhaps the great messiahs in our history were merely mouthpieces for entities they were able to enter into communication with while in an altered state of consciousness. What this means is that the so called “god” is really no more than an alien intelligence.  What do these entities want and what is their interest in humans?

In-out, in-outSome people would have you believe there is a code in the Bible. Some people would have you believe the Bible is the word of “god.” But considering the variety of contact experiences, whether naturally or chemically induced, it is clear that these entitities are quite varied and possess an intelligence. Can we then trust them to be our “god?” Can we even trust the messiah if he is merely the mouthpiece for some entity whose true agenda we will never know? Certainly not!  Consider, for a moment, that the bible code is real and therefore it is true interdimensional communication. This means it is really nothing more than a guide from one alien entity or species of entity trying to control the destiny of our world.  Putting Jesus aside for a moment, the “god” of Christianity is wrathful, angry, and sometimes downright narcissistic.  We cannot be so naive as to think all these entities are going to be as loving and caring as McKenna’s machine elves.

Now this line of thinking opens up a true pandora’s box of questions.  Perhaps the bible comes from evil entities?  And what about the the bible code? Or perhaps the bible is actually the true tool to enter hyperdimensional god hood and perhaps it is the space elves who will lead us to a path of stagnation and dullheadedness?  Or perhaps they have some evil plan beneath the veil?  Ultimately, there is only one response to the questions:  We just DON’T KNOW. In historical texts we find that some Shamans claimed to have contact with many of these “spirits” but there are few Shamans left and fewer that still practice the true art. We don’t know if these entities exist, let alone what their goals are, or how their intelligence and capabilities compares to ours.

Love XOXOUltimately, these questions are irrelevant.  Whether or not these entities exist, one thing stands very clear. Only trust what is written by man and his imagination. How do we know that some individual did in fact speak with “god?” And if he did and this entity told him some kind of “truth”, how can we trust to follow it? How do we know we wont be pawns in some game?  How do we know we can trust something that refuses to talk to us directly? How do we know we won’t be the tools of the plans of some being as they dictate our actions through time and space?  We don’t know.  Only trust a man willing to say his vision is his own writing and the product of his own thoughts. “It was no divine revelation, it was my own imagination” – that is the word of God. Anyone who says otherwise is either lying or telling you a dangerous truth. If God is a hyperdimensional entity than do not trust god, if God is some spirit in the cosmic consciousness than do not trust god, trust only yourself and your fellow man. Because if in fact these spirits are real, we do not know their true intentions and they may be far craftier than we can imagine. We should continue to explore and attempt to communicate in the altered state. However, we must approach such realms with caution and reserve. Data should be collected, hypotheses should be formed and tested, and the scientific method should be applied as much as possible. At the end of the day, we should remain skeptical.

CharonWe can only entrust the future of humanity to humanity itself. Lets unleash the true human within us! Forget the “plans” of “Gods” and their books, and forget the messiahs and their divine visions.

Instead, lets forge our own human driven path to creating a future of exploring and designing our own universe.  Unless these “gods” have something practical to say, forget about them, and elevate your imagination and your psyche to the level of the godhead.
